Choosing a Domain Name

Choosing A Domain For Your Niche

Choosing a domain is not really hard to do as long as you follow some basic rules.

If possible, always use a .com- A dot com name will be worth more money and typically will rank slightly better than a domain that is not a dot com.

Keep domain as short as possible- Keeping the domain name short enables people to remember it and can increase your search rankings.

Avoid words that are hard to spell- Use simple words so returning customers don’t typo your web address.

Try and avoid hyphens for Google- You will get penalized for this with Google sometimes.  There may not be any rhyme or reason for this, it just periodically shows up.

Use hyphens for MSN- This search engine seems to love domains with hyphens. If you are planning on building your niche blog business around MSN, you should definitely used domains with hyphens.

Don't mix letters and numbers- A domain that reads www. de876tre.com won’t earn you bonus points with the search engines. They are also harder for people to remember unless you are really unique (http://del.icio.us)

Don't substitute numbers for letters- Don’t use “zero” for the letter “o”.

Avoid homonyms- For instance “two” instead of “too”.

Avoid copyrighted or registered names- If you are using the name in question in a long tail keyword phrase, it will probably be ok, but if there is any question in your mind, always get approval from the owner.

Always use part of the long tail keyword in the domain- Since we will be dealing with these types of keyword phrases, doing this is essential.

These rules are good to keep in mind and reference when needed. However, these are not to be used in every instance when you are trying to create domains for your niche business.

Typically NetFluence Niches, like the ones we are creating are going to have longer domain names than normal sites because we are targeting long tail niche keywords and keyword phrases.

For instance if you are creating a blog and the niche keyword you are targeting is “koi fish tattoo art” your domain needs to include at least the main part of that phrase which would be “koi fish tattoo” I would personally use www.koifishtattooart.com if it were available. Even though it breaks some of the rules above, it will eventually rank higher in the search engines. Of course if your strategy is to use MSN as your main search engine, then your domain would be www.koi-fish-tattoo-art.com

The main rule of thumb to keep in mind when creating niche blogs is to match the domain name with the long tail niche keyword or keyword phrase we are targeting.

Sometimes you will be able to match it exactly and sometimes you will just use part of the niche keyword. It really depends on how long the niche keyword phrase is and the availability of the keywords when selecting the domain names.
